The Grand
165 Main Street, Ellsworth, Maine, 04605

On Thursday March 28th at 6:00 pm and a special captioned matinee on Friday, March 29th at 1 pm, The Grand continues its weekly “Awards Season” series of recent Award-winning and nominated films sponsored by H&R Block of Ellsworth and Bucksport, presented on the giant Coastal Eye Care with a British historical epic which was twice nominated for the 2019 Oscars- “Mary, Queen of Scots.” The film explores the turbulent life of the charismatic Mary Stuart (Saoirse Ronan). Queen of France at 16 and widowed at 18, Mary defies pressure to remarry. Instead, she returns to her native Scotland to reclaim her rightful throne. But Scotland and England fall under the rule of the compelling Elizabeth I (Margot Robbie). Each young Queen beholds her “sister” in fear and fascination. Rivals in power and in love, and female regents in a masculine world, the two must decide how to play the game of marriage versus independence. Determined to rule as much more than a figurehead, Mary asserts her claim to the English throne, threatening Elizabeth’s sovereignty. Betrayal, rebellion, and conspiracies within each court imperil both thrones – and change the course of history. With David Tennant, Guy Pearce and Adrian Lester. (2018. UK. 1hr, 42min. Directed by Josie Rourke. R.) Tickets for this General Admission presentation are $8 for Adults, $7 for Seniors/Students (15 and under) and $6 Grand Members (as well as Matinee screenings).
