On Thursday February 21st at 6:00 pm and a special captioned matinee on Friday, February 22nd at 4 pm, The Grand continues its weekly “Awards Season” series of recent Award-winning and nominated films sponsored by H&R Block of Ellsworth and Bucksport, presented on the giant Coastal Eye Care with a beautiful adaptation of the international bestseller- “The Wife.” After nearly forty years of marriage, Joan (Glenn Close, in a performance nominated for this year’s Best Actress Oscar) and Joe Castleman (Jonathan Pryce) are complements. Where Joe is casual, Joan is elegant. Where Joe is vain, Joan is self-effacing. And where Joe enjoys his very public role as Great American Novelist, Joan pours her considerable intellect, grace, charm, and diplomacy into the private role of “Great Man’s Wife.” Joe is about to be awarded the Nobel Prize for his acclaimed and prolific body of work. Joe’s literary star has blazed since he and Joan first met in the late 1950. The film interweaves the story of the couple’s youthful passion and ambition with a portrait of a marriage, thirty-plus years later- a lifetime’s shared compromises, secrets, betrayals, and mutual love. With Max Irons, Christian Slater and Elizabeth McGovern. (2018. US 1 hr, 40 min. Directed by Björn Runge. R.) Tickets for this General Admission presentation are $8 for Adults, $7 for Seniors/Students (15 and under) and $6 Grand Members (as well as Matinee screenings).
