Cotton's Ocean: Castine and the Antebellum Cotton Trade lecture

Dr. Stephen J. Hornsby will give an illustrated talk for the Castine Historical Society on the importance of the trans-Atlantic cotton trade for the growth of the shipbuilding and ship owning industries in Maine before the Civil War and how Castine fit into this world of oceanic commerce. Dr. Hornsby is Director of the Canadian-American Center and Professor of Geography and Canadian Studies at the University of Maine. He is the author and co-editor of several prize-winning books, including the Historical Atlas of Maine (2015). The free lecture is held in conjunction with the Castine Historical Society’s exhibit “Risky Business: Square-Rigged Ships and Salted Fish.” The lecture will be held in the Humanities Lecture Hall in the Bath Iron Works Center on the campus of Maine Maritime Academy.
