Ashley Bryan is the author of over 50 celebrated children’s books, winner of the New York Public Library’s Literary Lion, many Coretta Scott King awards, and recently the Newbery Honor for his book Freedom over Me. He is an extraordinary artist and humanitarian with audiences both young and old and whose life work celebrates joy, love, inclusivity and diversity.

A veteran of WWII, Ashley Bryan served in an all-Black battalion during World War II and preserved his humanity by drawing. For the past 50 years he has been living on the remote Cranberry Islands, Maine, and has been using art his entire life to celebrate joy, mediate the darkness of war and racism, explore the mysteries of faith, and create loving community.
