Local quilt and needlework designer/maker Carrie Palmer will present a four-week Sashiko stitch course for teens on Wednesdays, October 2nd to 23rd, at the Blue Hill Public Library. This introductory series will focus on the Japanese textile arts of sashiko & boro.
Sashiko, meaning ‘little stabs,’ is a simple running stitch used for decorative embroidery patterns. Boro, which translates to ‘rags,’ is the tradition of mending garments using sashiko embroidery and patches of fabric. Participants will decorate an up-cycled denim bag, using a sashiko running stitch and colorful fabric scraps to create a one of a kind boro style bag. No previous sewing experience is necessary & all materials will be provided.
Carrie has been an “arts & craftser” for as long as she can remember, cross-stitching next to her mother from an early age. Over the years stitching & sewing have become an essential part of everyday, whether it’s cross stitch stars for the Christmas tree, quilting, or simply sewing on a button. She believes that sewing is a handy skill and a wonderful hobby.
This series is for ages 12 and up. Thanks to the Friends of the Library, there is no charge but space is limited, so registration is required. Participants can register using the calendar at www.bhpl.net or by calling the library at 374-5515.
